All bathrooms can become dirty very easily, and ensuring that your bathroom is kept clean should be one of your top priorities in the home. Diseases can spread quickly as well as leaving the place smelling bad. If you use cleaning tips it will help you to clean effectively and efficiently and you will be able to maintain a clean bathroom.

Cleaning your bathroom might not be the most pleasant thing to do, but it doesn’t have to take you all day. These tips should be able to help you out…

Make A Bathroom Cleaning Schedule

There are so many different areas to clean in the bathroom, so keeping a schedule is the best way to keep on top of them. The bathroom should be cleaned weekly as it does get dirty very quickly. With a schedule in place, this will make things so much easier for you.

A tip to split up the cleaning is by doing areas where you would use the same products. The same cleaning products can be used to clean the sink and also the bath. You could also split up the cleaning by room, by doing the bath one day, and the toilet on another day, then the sink and mirror on another day and the floor.

We don’t all have the time to clean full rooms in one day, as you may have more than one bathroom/toilet.

Get The Cleaning Supplies

For these tips, you will need to have some tools. You will need to get these cleaning products together, and they can work for any schedule. Some people say that natural cleaning products are best for the bathroom, but they may lack the strength of commercial cleaning products which will be a lot stronger.

There are loads of great cleaning products for your bathroom, whether you buy them from the shops or you make your own household cleaning products.

Natural Cleaning Products For The Bathroom

There are cleaning solutions that you make yourself and they are very cost-effective, they all seem to contain baking soda or vinegar. Baking soda can be put on many different surfaces and clean with a damp cloth.

Because vinegar is so strong, you will need to make a diluted solution. If you can have a bowl or bucket of pure vinegar, soak some cloths in there, or in a solution which is half water half vinegar. You should have a few spray bottles on hand to use your solutions.

If you add lemon to the baking soda, this will provide your bathroom with a clean citrus fragrance and it will also clean any chrome fixtures instead of having to use vinegar. You can use some rubbing alcohol and a cotton pad on your mirror if it is grubby from splashes from make-up, toothpaste, etc.

Chemical Cleaning Products For The Bathroom

You can use an all-purpose cleaner in a variety of areas when you are cleaning your bathroom. Also, a glass cleaning product would come in handy. Another common product to use for cleaning the bathroom is bleach, it has always been around and can help with many areas.

With bleach though, there are many health concerns to consider so you probably won’t want to use it everywhere. If there are shower cleaning tips on the back of the bottle, then make sure to follow all of these. Chlorine bleach is effective, but a lot more dangerous and it can discolour grout over time. Commercial tile cleaners work very well, they are generally bleach-based.

Baking soda is good to use as a toilet cleanser, but there are plenty of other options if you would like something which smells pleasant, and more powerful.

Get The Right Brushes

If you have the right brush, it will make scrubbing stubborn stains so much easier. There are lots of bathroom cleaning brushes out there, but some really good bathroom cleaning tools were not intended to be used for that purpose. Like an old toothbrush can be used but obviously that is not what they were made to do.

A bath brush usually has a long handle, so you will be able to clean the bath effectively without taking up too much of your day. They can also be used as a brush for cleaning the shower. For tiled floors or shower walls, you will need to use a grout brush to clean them. These brushes are small stiff brushes, and they can have a long handle. An old toothbrush will not do the trick as the bristles are too soft.

If you have a good shower cleaning brush you will be able to clean the walls of the shower and the showerhead. It is important to have a toilet brush so you can clean those hard to reach places,

Get Plenty Of Cloths

Microfibre cloths are the best cleaning cloths for bathrooms. If you are really stuck though, any soft cloth will do. You should have a few cloths, for each type of cleaning product that you use you will need a different cloth and clean ones to dry off areas.

If you don’t have any cloths, another option is disposable bathroom cleaning wipes. If you are cleaning the toilet, it may be better to use them rather than using a microfibre as that would have to be thrown out after use. These disposable cloths are already soaked in a cleaning solution, so you also don’t have to use any cleaning products. Here are some bathroom tips to help you to decide which items to clean together. This is good when you have several bathrooms, or if you are cleaning other areas of the house which have some of the same features in them.

The same products and methods can be used in a few areas in your bathroom. Calcium and other minerals can build up on all of your fixtures, especially if you have hard water, like most of London. Vinegar is the best natural cleaner that you can use. Your bathtub and sink will usually be made of the same material, so they can be cleaned with the same materials. As bathtubs are much bigger than sinks, you will be better off using a bathtub brush as this will be a lot faster than scrubbing with an old toothbrush as you may have done in the past.

The Bathroom Cleaning Checklist

You would have the checklist put in this order – working from area to area.

Clean the Bathroom Walls

The walls should be lightly dusted with a microfibre cloth, this only needs to be done every few months. If you want to do a proper clean of the walls, then they should be washed with some soapy water every year.

You should test a small area of the wall to make sure that you are not going to cause any harm to it. The bathroom wall coverings must be able to withstand steam, so you won’t have anything to worry about when you are cleaning the walls. Make sure that you don’t forget about cleaning the fan in the bathroom. It can be easily cleaned with a can of air which you would use on your computer to clean the dust from it.

Clean The Mirror

By using a cotton pad with some rubbing alcohol on it, you will be able to clean up thick grime from the mirror, especially when it comes to make-up or splashes from toothpaste. Once this has been done, you can then apply a glass cleaner or your diluted vinegar solution. Wipe the mirror with your cloth, working from left to right and top to bottom. Your mirror will be looking good once this is done.

By using a microfibre cloth on the mirror, you will have no streaks at all. Alternatively, you could even use a squeegee and some newspaper.

Clean The Bathroom Countertop And Sink

As we know, bathroom sinks can be built into a countertop. This is less likely to collect grime than the sink, but it can be cleaned with the same tools. These instructions will be fine with most sinks, except copper or stone sinks.

Make sure to clean the sink fixture first. If it is not that dirty, then warm soapy water will be fine. If there is a lot of calcium build-up, then you can wipe it off with a cloth soaked in vinegar or a calcium remover.

The countertop and sink are next on the list. Using warm water, wet the area and add a pinch of baking soda and a squeeze of lemon if required. You can then work this into a paste with a cloth or brush. The baking soda has the power to remove all sorts of stuff, like toothpaste, makeup, and anything else which may be in and around your sink.

An old toothbrush can be used to get into the sealed areas. Rinse and dry the sink to ensure that all of the baking soda has been removed. Then, using your diluted vinegar and water solution and a cloth, give everything another wipe.

If your bathroom sink is clogged up, baking soda and vinegar can help to unclog it and there won’t be any reaction occurring in the drains. Lastly, give everything a rinse with warm soapy water. If you have a copper or stone sink, this would be the only process, unless you buy a specialist solution specially made for stone and copper sinks.

Clean The Toilet

As we all know, cleaning the toilet can be an unpleasant task but our tips will be able to make it a little easier for you to tackle. These toilet cleaning tips will help you to cut down on the time you need to perform other tasks.

First of all, you will need to remove everything which is near to the toilet in case of any splashes. Then add your toilet cleanser or a cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl. While this sits in the bowl, close the toilet lid and clean the exterior of the toilet. The most effective way to clean it is to start from the top and spray the toilet with whichever cleaner you prefer and wipe it down. Ensure that you clean the tank and handle, where it meets the floor and everywhere else.

The toilet seat should be cleaned next. Spray all over the toilet with cleaner and wipe it down. For a really deep clean, you can remove the seat to get it cleaned properly. By the time that this is done, the cleaner inside the bowl should have done all of its work. Using the toilet brush, scrub the bowl from the top to the bottom of the bowl and down the toilet itself. Flush the toilet with the lid down so nothing splashes out.

Over the newly cleaned bowl, you can clean the toilet brush by pouring some bleach onto the bristles, leave it to sit for a minute and then rinse. If you are not going to clean the floor then put all the items back which you moved earlier. Another tip is to pour some disinfectant into the toilet brush holder so it will be clean for the next time you use it.

Clean The Shower

All of the shower cleaning tools you need will be a shower cleaning brush or old toothbrush, vinegar, and some cloths. If you have a tiled shower wall, then you may need some grout cleaning products and tools.

Begin by cleaning the showerhead. Calcium build-up on the showerhead can reduce water pressure which can cause your showerhead to clog up. Most showerheads have little rubber nozzles which can be scrubbed clean with a toothbrush, but it is best to use a shower head brush if you have one. If you are deep cleaning the bathroom, or tackling an area with bad limescale, then it is best to use vinegar or whichever cleaner you prefer.

If your showerhead is old, you may want to get a new one, preferably a handheld one. You can pick one up cheap enough, and they are very easy to put together.

  • Put some vinegar or commercial cleaning product into a plastic bag, tie it up and leave it to soak for a few hours or even overnight. You could remove the showerhead from the pipe if you prefer and let it soak in a bucket.
  • Once this has been cleaned, run the shower for a few minutes to drain off any excess vinegar or cleaning product.
  • Clean the shower walls next. Unless they are tiled with grouting, just wipe them down with a cloth soaked in vinegar or a limescale remover.

If your shower walls are tiled with grouting, we have some tips for those in this article. Most shower curtains can be washed in the washing machine. If you add a towel or two to the wash, this will help to scrub your shower curtain.

Clean The Bathtub

Begin by cleaning the bathtub fixtures. The taps can be cleaned first with warm soapy water. If that isn’t enough, then try cleaning the taps with half vinegar and water with a cloth. Although this should be safe, start by cleaning a very small area as a test to make sure that you don’t damage the taps. If you are cleaning the taps with a commercial cleaning product, always make sure that you check all of the instructions first.

Make sure that the bathtub is completely empty, and get your cleaning products and cleaning brush at the ready. With your spray bottle, apply your vinegar solution or bathtub cleaner. Leave it to sit for 15 minutes or so. Once this has gone to work, you can then loosen up the dirt and grime with your bathtub cleaning brush. Your bath brush will help you to clean bigger areas more quickly than using an old toothbrush.

Rinse the whole area with water and dry it with your clean microfibre cloth. If the bathtub drains water slowly, then put some baking soda and vinegar down the drain. Close the drain cover and leave it for a few minutes, and rinse it out with hot water or use a commercial drain cleaner.

 Clean The Floor

There are two main ways to clean bathroom floors. One of the ways is specifically for floors with tiles and grouting, and the other one is for all other bathroom floors.

The main difference is that vinegar is not the best product for cleaning bathroom tiles while it is definitely suitable for other types of bathroom flooring. Grab your grouting brush and grouting cleaner. You will then need to apply your cleaner to the grouting, scrub it with the brush, then rinse and dry with a microfibre cloth.

For the tiles, you can wipe them down with a vinegar solution or multi-purpose cleaner. With vinegar you do need to be careful as you could damage the grouting.

A steam mop can also be used to clean the tiled floors and the grouting.

If there are no tiles on your bathroom floor, the only difference between cleaning bathroom floors and any other types of floors are the tight spaces in the bathroom. Bathrooms, in general, are usually too small to use long-handled mops, so it can be easier to wipe the floor with your vinegar solution or multi-purpose cleaner, this will need to be done for the place where your mop is unable to reach.

How To Clean The Bathroom in 5 Minutes

Sometimes it is hard to find the time to carry out a full deep clean of your bathroom. When you are busy with family and other commitments, here is a good bathroom schedule for you which can take 5 minutes:

  • Tidy up by putting everything back in its place, for example, any towels or items on the floor and anything which is left on the countertop.
  • With your vinegar mixture or other cleaning agent, spray all of the surfaces. Spray the counters, mirrors, sinks, toilets, and inside the shower.
  • Using your toilet bowl cleaner, squeeze some into the bowl. It is best to start at the top of the bowl so that all of the fluid goes down into the bowl.
  • All of the surfaces which have been sprayed should now be wiped. Move your towel in quick circular motions, and use a separate towel for the toilet.
  • Using a toilet brush, scrub the toilet with toilet cleaner. Then rinse the brush and flush the toilet.

This quick process should only take a few minutes to complete, depending on how dirty the bathroom is. This is a great way to clean the room quickly. If you have guests coming over and you need to get the place cleaned quickly, this a great routine to use.
